Loretta Lynn
Loretta Lynn Honored With Van Lear Rose
2010 has been pretty good for legendary country music icon Loretta Lynn. It’s her 50th year in the music business and, as a result, Lynn has been honored more than a few times this year. Not too long after the recent release of Coal Miner’s Daughter, the album on which Loretta hand-picked fellow country artists to lend their voices to her songs, comes the latest honor with a twist. The singer won’t be able to display this honor on a mantle, her wall or a display case; instead she’ll have to head outdoors to enjoy it in the garden. Sony Music Nashville, the label Lynn calls home, recently presented the songstress with her very own Van Lear Rose, appropriately named after her 2004 album of the same name. The album earned Loretta a Grammy award and was produced by The White Stripes rocker Jack White.
In response to being presented with the honor Loretta had this to say:
Roses have always been so special to me. So to have a rose named after one of my albums …well, I’m not sure I quite have words for that! I’m just very, very honored. I can’t wait to have those Van Lear roses blooming in my yard!
Billboard Dishes Out What We Didn't See On TV At The CMAs
Have you ever wondered what kinds of things go on during an award show like last nights CMAs that we just can't see on television? Well, Billboard dished the dirt on their web site for us.
Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton dominated the night both in front of and behind the cameras with their multiple award wins. Billboard points out that some people were just how talented their children will be!
With the soon-to-be-wed Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton dominating the night, Lady Antebellum's Charles Kelley said he was anxious for them to have a child so they could "See how good that thing sings."
Loretta Lynn also gave her approval of Miranda saying that "Nothing in country music is more country than Miranda." I have to agree, she's got twang, she's got attitude and I hear she's just about always packing some heat in her handbag! Got to love that in a woman!
Martina McBride On Being A "Louisiana Woman"
Ok, Martina McBride is a Kansas girl through and through but on the upcoming Loretta Lynn tribute album entitled "Coal Miner's Daughter" McBride belts out a duet of "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man" with Alan Jackson. Loretta Lynn originally released the song as a duet with Conway Twitty back in 1973.
So who came up with the pairing for the song this time around? McBride did.
"Alan is one of my favorite country singers, and I have always loved his voice," she said. "He's very traditional, and I just thought he'd be perfect for this."
On why she chose to record the song "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man" McBride recalled
"My dad was a huge Conway Twitty fan, so I grew up listening to Conway and Loretta."
Still Proud To Be A Coal Miner's Daughter
Chapter 16 is a service of Humanities Tennessee, whose purpose is to provide education in the humanities to Tennesseans.
Loretta Lynn talked with Chapter 16 about the reissue of her bestselling memoir fifty years after her first single hit the charts. Loretta has been such a big part of country music and especially women in country music that I wanted to share the story but give credit where it's due. Chapter 16: A lot of people credit Coal Miner’s Daughter with bringing country music to a larger audience. When you sat down to write the book, did you have any inkling of the impact it would have?
